Fifteen members and esteemed guests met at the Tri-County Museum in Cascade on Sunday, August 19 for a brief meeting.
The Tri-County Museum boasts a wonderful exhibit on Hall of Famer, Urban "Red" Faber, and we got a chance to look around the exhibit, which included a simulated radio call of the final inning of the 1917 World Series (performed by Hawkeye play-by-play man, Gary Dolphin), a recording of Red's Hall of Fame acceptance speech, and some wonderful memorabilia.
Red may not have the stature of Bob Feller, but the Faber exhibit that has been lovingly assembled by the Tri-County Historical Society certainly compares favorably with the Bob Feller Museum in Van Meter. Definitely a must-see for any hardcore baseball fan (i.e. any SABR member).
Special thanks to Brian Cooper for taking time to say a few words about Red's career and for setting up the visit.
A traveling party of four, which included long-time SABR member Cap Gagnon, was in the area to visit the Field of Dreams, and joined us for the museum visit. Thanks to them for stopping, as safe travels on their journey to Chicago for games at Wrigley and US Cellular Field.
Steve Smith was kind enough to put together a quick trivia quiz, which was won by Steve Elsberry, who now has posession of the traveling trophy.
We hope to meet next the weekend of October 12, which should coincide with the release of the movie, "A Final Season," the tale of the Norway H.S. baseball team's last year. The idea is to meet for lunch, then attend the movie. Or attend the movie, then a dinner meeting. If anyone has suggestions for possible meeting sites, we will entertain them.
And now, I'm off to Ontario to hook some walleyes...
